October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #29

strangers

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 29th is… The Strangers.

Official Synopsis: A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants.

The Strangers (2008) can take credit for reviving and popularizing the “Home Invasion” subgenre (a troupe popular in the ‘70’s with films like Straw Dogs and Last House on the Left) and paved the way for the likes of The Agression Scale the wildly successful You’re Next. It’s a lot scarier than just about every other film on my countdown (Frontier(s) being perhaps the only exception), but I’m including it for one crucial reason: Some of us really like being scared on Halloween—and The Strangers is fucking scary as hell! What’s the story behind these mute and monotone masked intruders who happen to descend when the protagonist couple is already under a lot of stress? Is there a connection or is this simply a wrong-place-wrong-time scenario? Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years, something to fill in the cracks and expand on the story. Vertigo Entertainment should really take notice because, in my opinion, The Strangers has amazing franchise potential—and those masks are already iconic. If you can handle high intensity slow burn suspense, The Strangers delivers in spades!
