October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #27

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 27th is… Scream.

Official Synopsis: A masked killer begins murdering teenagers in a small town, and as the body count rises, one girl and her friends contemplate the “rules” of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.

Okay, in a lot of ways Scream is like a joke that everyone already knows the punch line to—but it’s a really good joke! Wes Craven’s 1996 offering shattered all the rules by pointing them out in the first truly self-aware Horror movie. And besides, there are plenty of great scenes and subplots along the way. Drew Berrymore’s opening sequence is legendary and is often described as the most shocking move death since the shower-scene in Psycho. Neve Campbell is fresh and feisty as the virginal Sidney Prescott. The romance between characters played by Courtney Cox and David Arquette (who met on set and later married in “real life”) absolutely crackles. Rose McGowan has an infamous death scene. You also get an awesome scene with a high school principal played by Herny Winkler, and an absolutely priceless meltdown by Mathew Lillard at the film’s climax. Forget about the abysmal sequels (especially the tortuous Part 4) but relish the compelling momentum of the original. If nothing else, it’s a fun stroll down memory lane!
