Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here are 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time. Enjoy!

My recommendation for October 25th is… Pet Sematary.

Official Synopsis: Behind a young family’s home in Maine is a terrible secret that holds the power of life after death. When tragedy strikes, the threat of that power soon becomes undeniable.

Pet Sematary is perhaps the best American horror movie to come from the 1990’s.  While the 90’s are generally regarded as a terrible decade for genre films, Pet Sematary still stands up today, packing incredible scares.  Another one based on a Stephen King novel, this film is incredibly nuanced and compelling.  We have a doctor coming to grips with the limitations of his abilities; when death strikes close to home, he’s willing to do anything to reverse course.  In addition to the main plotline involving family and mortality, there are a bunch of mini-sub plots that really ratchet up the intensity.  We have one of the Dr.’s deceased patients haunting his daughter.  We have a flashback to a resurrection with disastrous results.  The Dr.’s wife is crippled by flashbacks of taking care of her terminally ill sister—the unnerving and witch-like Zelda, deformed and wretched.  Still, the scariest character in the film turns out to be a toddler!  Few films can get under your skin the way Pet Sematary does, making it a great choice for Halloween movie-viewing.
