October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, # 24

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here are 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time. Enjoy!

My recommendation for October 24th is… Otis.

Official Synopsis: Suburban America gone haywire. In the midst of a serial abductor/killer’s rampage, a beautiful young teen, Riley Lawson, goes missing. When her desperate parents, Will and Kate, are contacted by her kidnapper, an insufferable FBI Special Agent takes charge of the case.  But, from deep within the psychopathic subterranean world created by Otis, Riley turns the tables on her tormentor, manages to escape and to contact her parents. And, fed up with the tragi-comic inability of the FBI to find their girl, Will, Kate, and Riley’s brother, Reed decide to take matters – and justice – into their own hands.

Never doubt that a lot of truly excellent films are tragically released straight to DVD; this is especially true in the Horror genre.  Raw Feed, a straight to DVD division of Warner that specializes in Horror has delivered a handful of winners, but nothing as delightfully subversive as Otis.  It’s been said (and I agree) that Otis and The Loved Ones would make an excellent nightmare-prom-themed double-feature. Daniel Stern and Illeana Douglas are hysterical as the devoted and deranged parents of the victim Will and Kate (total coincidence, as this was filmed in 2007 before there was a young royal couple in England).  Anyone who has seen Raw Feed’s previpous release of the medical horror Sublime will also find a nice Easter Egg—if you pay close attention!  Bostin Chrisopher is brilliant as the titular man-child Otis.
