October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #22

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 22nd is… Nightbreed.

Official Synopsis: A troubled young man is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of monsters are hiding from humanity.

I first saw Nightbreed when it was released in 1990, the Summer before my senior year in High School, and I’ve been a strong supporter of this film ever sense. Based on the novella Cabal by Clive Barker, Nightbreed is more than horror, more than fantasy—something almost completely unique in the pantheon of cinema. The movie was clearly ahead of its time, subverting the concept of monsters over 20 years before the trend of sexy vampires and misunderstood miscreants. The strong cult status of Nightbreed resulted in the recent release of the Director’s Cut (official release date is 10/28 but you can get an advanced copy when ordering directly from distributor Shout Factory) just in time for Halloween. This newer, extended version overseen by Barker himself, adds incredible depth to a story already rich in nuance and mythology (And monsters! Lots of new monsters!). Spend an evening amongst the “Tribes of the Moon” and you may find yourself drawn into your own mythical quest to Midian.
