October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #21

The Mist

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 21st is… The Mist.

Official Synopsis: A freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.

The Mist, based on a novella by Stephen King, is widely regarded as one of the best horror films of the 2000’s. Helmed by Frank Darabont (who also wrote/directed the movie adaptations of King’s The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile) The Mist succeeds as both sci-fi terror and gut wrenching drama. As ordinary people succumb to the stress of extraordinary circumstances, they become more frightening than the inter-dimensional beasties surrounding them. The film’s conclusion is as divisive as it is emotionally devastating, an extreme shocker even by horror movie standards. The cast is amazing, the FX’s are spot on, and the script is taught and compelling throughout. Definitely a reflection of our society’s post 9-11 anxieties, The Mist is brilliant, nuanced storytelling—just an absolute winner!
