October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, # 18

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order, here are 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time. Enjoy!

My recommendation for October 18th is… The Hills Run Red.

Official Synopsis: A group of young horror fans go searching for a film that mysteriously vanished years ago but instead find that the demented killer from the movie is real, and he’s thrilled to meet fans who will die gruesomely for his art.

Folks at Dark Castel Entertainment done fucked up when they made the decision to release The Hills Run Red straight to video in 2009.  Not only did it deprive the masses of a theatrical release, it slapped the film with a stigma—one that implies the studio had no faith in its ability to make money.  It’s a damn shame because, in my opinion, The Hills Run Red could have been the next great Horror Franchise.  The villain, Babyface, is original and compelling enough to associates with some of the genre’s greatest icons, but a recent list on Best Horror Movies of the 51 best slashers/killers in film didn’t even include him.  In addition to featuring a brilliant bady, The Hills Run Red has great acting, great writing, and great practical FX.  Essential a meta-film, it’s both intelligent and brutal.

List so far:

  1. American Mary
  2. Behind the Mask
  3. Botched
  4. Cabin Fever
  5. Chop
  6. The Cottage
  7. Dark City
  8. Dawn of the Dead
  9. Dead Snow
  10. Drag Me to Hell
  11. End of the Line
  12. Evil Dead
  13. Excision
  14. Feast
  15. Fido
  16. Frankenstein’s Army
  17. Frontier(s)
  18. The Hills Run Red
