October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #7

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order (and by no means a completely representative), here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 7th is… Dark City.

Official Synopsis: A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans.

Hands down, one of the best horror/sci-fi’s ever, Dark City is a stylish mix of metaphysics and neo-noir. Christopher Nolan admits to being influenced by this film’s unique aesthetic when he began working on Inception. A perpetually dark metropolis is controlled by an insect-like alien race that inhabits human corpses; their appearance is ghostly and reminiscent of Clive Barker’s Cenobites. The human inhabitants of this city are blissfully unaware of their manipulation by the aliens, where they are little more than lab-rats. The history and circumstances of this bizarre city are fantastic and otherworldly. In addition to creating a mood that is both nightmarish and claustrophobic, Dark City offers a cop-drama sub-plot that moves the action along nicely. Dark City came out around the same time as The Matrix and somehow became lost in its shadow. Don’t sleep on this bona fide sleeper hit!

List so far:

  1. American Mary
  2. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
  3. Botched
  4. Cabin Fever
  5. Chop
  6. The Cottage
  7. Dark City
