October Countdown: 31 Fantastic Films to Make Your Halloween Scream, #6

Are you looking to hang out with a few friends on Halloween night and watch a great horror flick? Every day in October, I’ll be suggesting a film that I believe will make for excellent Halloween viewing. Whether you’re an avid celebrator or a casual observer of the holiday, these films will convey the proper mood and spirit of October. In no particular order (and by no means a completely representative), here’s the next entry in my list of 31 excellent movies for Halloween Night—or whenever you’re looking for a frightfully good time.

My recommendation for October 6th is… The Cottage.

Official Synopsis: In a remote part of the countryside, a bungled kidnapping turns into a living nightmare for four central characters when they cross paths with a psychopathic farmer and all hell breaks loose.

Andy Serkis is famous for bringing humanity to inhuman CGI characters: Gollum in Lord of the Rings and Cesar in the most recent Planet of the Apes franchise are the best examples. It might surprise you to know, however, that when stripped of his motion-capture suit Serkis is still a genius thespian of the highest magnitude. Case in point: 2008’s The Cottage, an absolutely madcap mix of heist, horror, and humor. This brilliant horror comedy has somehow flown below most people’s radar, so I highly recommend giving it a shot. The Cottage will have you screaming and laughing up a storm, with a twist-ending that’s totally—to die for!

List so far:

  1. American Mary
  2. Behind the Mask
  3. Botched
  4. Cabin Fever
  5. Chop
  6. The Cottage
